Can you run a 9 spd chainset with an 8 spd chain/cassette? I don't want to upgrade to 9spd, but need a new chainset. LBS'give me conflicting advice. Help!!!

You may have problems if you are using a Shimano indexed front derailleur as the spacing can be different depending on which equipment you are using.Otherwise there's not real reason why it won't work. The usual problems are poor chainline and obscure chainring sizes. Be careful to get the right length bottom bracket to get the chainline right.

Thanks for the reply. I've got an XTR 9spd (off the montain bike) that I am thinking of putting on it. The bike is a giant hybrid type. I am running bar end shifters so I can not see a problem with the front derailer. Old fashion friction shifter.

Yep. the best way, it should work fine. I can never work out why Shimano went to index front mechs. They are a pain in the a***!
