Any advice on insuring my new bike. Its my latest pride and joy and the cheapest quote I can find is £550 ! . I could insure a Ducatti Monster for less than this. The odd thing is that the quotes I have had only ask my postcode when the main risk , I would have thought, is having it stolen or wreaking it and that would be far from home.

Hiscox have recently increased their excess to £250 - which means (in my opinion) that they take very little risk and make it less likely that you will claim - thus removing the benefit of insurance cover to a large extent. Shop around.

If I remember rightly these guys http://www.eta.co.uk were bloody cheap and also coverwise and stuff that goes with it was pretty hard to beat when I was shopping around.
