choices??

I posted this on GEAR too as not sure which was best.I'm thinking of getting a road bike that allows me to do some faster rides but also long distance with panniers occasionally and commuting. So thinking a compact road bike is the answer (assuming I've got the terminology correct). I've been advised I need a stronger frame cause of carrying weight but keen to keep weight down. Either way guess it will be lighter than my MTB. I'm out in Taiwan so prices will be good but limited in range. Giant is a popular one out here. I'm looking to spent up to £500 at UK prices but less if I can. Any recommendations on bikes or suggestions of what I should look for? I'm 5'2-3" - wasn't thinking of looking at women's bikes but be great to get the best bike for those faster/ longer rides.Thanks"

p.s. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Schwinn Supersport GS? It doesn't look too cool in beige but seems to have better components than Giant FCR1.
