I've been riding mountain bikes for the last 10 years or so and am now going onto road bikes. Over the last 6 moths or so i've experienced a dull ache around my left knee, either behind the knee cap or just to the right of it. I've adjusted my cleats & saddle but still seem to get it and am worried it might cause a long term problem if i keep riding!. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.ThanksJedd

I have a similar problem.Just started riding my road bike again. Haven't touched my mountian bike for a while, went out Sunday morning on it only for a hour and my right knee to the right side of the knee had shooting pains going through it. Got on the road bike yesterday and no problems at all...... I think it's a case of looking at the postion on the bike...

Thanks for the reply, it seems the ache might last for a week, disappear then reappear though ever experienced that?

Did a while ago but that was sorted by adjusting the saddle height, seems it was a little to low.

Do you drink a lot of coffee? If so then try cutting back or cutting out altogether for a bit. You might get withdrawal symptons.I've found that a high Vitamin C, Cod-liver oil and other omega-3 supplements help.If I change bikes then for two weeks I get knee problems. Also, if you sweat a lot it is not just fluid you loose but salt as well. If you get low on salt you will get horrendous cramps! Take salted peanuts on long rides.

Jedd, a dull ache sounds more like tendonitis. This is probably caused by the change in position on the road bike, or alternatively a bio-mechanical problem with the crank arms/shoes/cleats/pedals. Best check all of those out and if it is persisting go see a physio and see what they have to say......

You have to be careful with shoes. I only recently found out that a lot of my old knee injuries were down to using the wrong shoes! Makes you wonder.I am trying to think what your pain would be, and I am trying to remember which way you would have to alter your cleats to remove pain on teh inside of your knee. If I remember I will let you knOW.
