Need to replace 700X25 tyres fitted to Alex DD2 rims. Can you safely fit 700x23 tyres or not?. What are the pitfalls?.

i would guess yes but i don't have any experience of those rims.23mm tyres roll faster but puncture more easily

Thanks Martin. Just looked again, they are actually DA22 rims. I realise that 23/700 are narrower but how does that relate to rim width etc?. My previous experiences have all been with mountain bike tyres.

When I got my new bike just after Christmas (Barraccuda Azzurri v cheap from LBS) it came with 700/20...Now have a 23mm on the front and a 25 on the back, and they both fit fine. (Not sure of my rims tho...new to biking...they're not a brand a recognise)

Saw a link the other day to the always-terrific Sheldon Brown and his page on tyre sizes. Quite informative !

Thanks for the Sheldon Brown mention. You are correct very informative. 700/23 should be OK but I will measure my rim size to double check.

Yes, 23s will be OK on those rims. I have seen some with Vittoria Open Corsa KX 23s on and they were just fine.Cheers

Thanks for all the replies, I have been using 700/23 on these rims with no problems at all for some 300 miles now.

There is a miss-conception that narrow tires roll better. They are lighter and are dynamic weight. They also create less drag.
