    Tour de Romandie discussion

Tour de Romandie prologue: Thomas wins, Sky team-mate Cavendish third

There are few better than Geraint Thomas over 4km at the moment and he's only going to go quicker before London 2012...

Interesting that it's his first WorldTour win. Certainly won't be the last.

Thank goodness for that. After hogging the headlines during the early part of the season and then with the track world champs there's been a dearth of Great Brit victories during the spring classics. Hopefully we're back on track now for multiple Cav stage, and Wiggo stage race wins. Bonus for G though and hopefully for a others in lesser supporting roles.
It's not your destination that counts, it is the glory of the ride. (apologies to Edward Monkton)

Without wishing to put too much of a dampenner on things - let's not forget that this was just a short 4km time trial and that Thomas is a specialist at that sort of distance (and it would seem that he got the best of the weather). Most of the top riders would not want to flog themselves to death (or risk a fall) for the sake of a few seconds.
Let's see how a track rider does when we get to the 'proper' stages before shouting too much.

Ye of little faith. G has already stated what you said Ian so why denigrate his performance? Of course he's not going to have the legs in this race to compete on GC but his previous performances in the classics and the TDF have proven he's a class act. Why the Brit bashing? Maybe when Cav wins a couple of sprint stages you'll say it's a sh1t small race and when Wiggo wins the long TT and GC that the others weren't trying because it's just a warm-up race, or if he doesn't then he's not up to it! Lets give credit where its due.

I think you'll find that I wasn't denigrating his performance, I just said that it's no wonder he did well over three and a bit kilometres - and that he would be useless when it cme to a 'proper' stage.
And it appears that I was right - he came nowwhere on the first stage.
Well done to Wiggo though - a fine finish, especially as he apparantly had a mechanical 20km out, just as things were hotting up.

btw - Not sure how you can say Thomas was a 'class act' in the TdeF - he did quite well in the first few stages, when people are just getting going, although he completely failed to do his job as support in his excitement, then fell back as soon as the road turned upwards.

I think you might find that he was (nearly) first over the highest col of the tour last year only dropped in the last few metres - so much for no climbing skills!

Wiggo displays hidden talents with a sprint victory. Is there anything this man can't do?
