Talking Hi all - new to the sport!

    Hi all,

I've just taken up road cycling (4 weeks ago) and am really enjoying it. I'm based in Northern Ireland. Did downhill mtbing for a few years when I was a teenager so I'm familiar with bike maintenance etc but road bikes are completely new to me.

I want to complete a century cycle in 2012. Looking for some general advice on the forum, so I'm interested to read through the sections you have on nutrition etc.

I bought a Coyote Big Sur and will upgrade parts over time. I didn't want to spend much incase it wasn't for me - but it looks like it is, so no doubt I will catch the bug and will upgrade the bike in future!
I already have shimano clipless pedals and deda fluida bars on it, with more changes planned in the near future.

    Nathan

Nice looking bike Nathan, but you seem to have a watering can fixed to your seatpost. Are you a big drinker?

That's to pour water on his brakes when they are glowing red!

After all, he used to be a down hiller!!!

    Welcome mate. Enjoy the ride.

It's a serious business Nathan, this Road cycling malarkey as you've probably noticed.

Haha thanks for the welcome all! On a serious note I did a 3 hour cycle on Friday and had my water bottle emptied in around 1 hour. Also left the house with no money so couldnt buy water when i was out.

I think I'll install a second bottle in place of my pump, but where do I put the pump? Do many of you ride with 2 bottles? If so, do you carry a pump?

Ps my shimano top and shorts arrived today. 28 quid inc postage for the pair. Not bad value eh?

Yep, disposable income is very quickly earmarked for numerous upgrades. Much time is spent browsing eBay etc for "things I really need" haha

I always ride with two bottles. Not sure from your picture, but some pump holders can be installed with a bottle cage on top of them. My pump goes in the bike bag like you have on your saddle - but I did buy a very short one specifically for that - the one you have is probably too big to get in there.

Thanks for the advice! I hadn't thought of that (using the same mounting for pump and bottle). Not sure how long the hex bolts are but I could probably countersink the pump bracket slightly (it's about 5mm thick) or source bigger hex bolts.

    Cheers

My mini pump is mounted between the bottle cage and frame, just need a couple of longer hex bolts - I tend to use both for the longer rides. I used to carry the pump in my pocket, but i used to on occasion come out and on occasion get run over, to the point where it went to the great inflator in the sky
