Froome, Tiernan-Locke and co are in for a challenging weekend, courtesy of 10 ascents of the Bemelberg and Cauberg. Here's a look at the type of preparation they'll employ and how it can help the rest of us with that hilly sportive.

Good article. I do over geared hill repeats in winter it's a great strengthener as long as you don't have any alignment knee issues. The fuel efficiency is a key nugget of information too.

"Seated climbing requires a strong core..... You will be able to make improvements fairly quickly as your body adapts to the neuromuscular stimulation of this type of training, but if you struggle to stay seated, or experience back ache, it would be wise to work on your core strength in the winter to give you greater potential when spring rolls round".

How about an article JUST on the exact exercises advised for this? The word "core strength" is always being spouted, but what did Wiggo do all last winter for example (I read he did in preparation for seated low gear spinning when climbing)?

Thanks for the feedback, Greg, and good shout, Bally - Jo's an expert in this field. We'll let her know.

I have f'd up disc's in my lower back and constantly in pain if I do anything slightly overpowering.
I need lower back exercises that wont cripple me and prevent me cycling.

Yes, a very good and interesting article. Should make the winter training runs a little more intreresting as I'm not the best climber.

When's the book being released? Less than 100 days to Xmas y'know...
