Gents there are two schools of thought. One that advocates the bling lightweight road bike that will only take 23mm tyres max and has no guard mounts and ride that all year. The other ride a winter bike with full guards and fatter tyres from October to March then bring out the race bike for race season through the summer months.

I'm glad to be in the second school as i've just packed up the race bike at the weekend. I am riding the fat tyred winter bike now and it was 2.5 degrees on the commute this morning.

You pay your money and make your own choice. If you haven't tried fat tyres and full guards you may be missing out.

Im with Greg on this one, but I do take the good bike out occasionally in the winter but only on dry days, its a treat.
Maybe it because we live in Scotland and the weather is not so good at this time of year, but I hate riding in the cold and getting a wet arse, the cold I can cope with, the wet arse is a no no, also if you are riding with others they will benifit from your guards, riding in a constant spray from somebody else's wheel is not nice.
Just my sixpeneth, you dont have to agree.

given that down south for the last few years it has been dryer between october and april than during the summer months happy to stick with the 23s all year round. Since I am an antisocial git when on the road, happy to share the belgium toothpaste with those using my wheel to avoid the wind (my social riding is on the mtb and quite frankly that redefines muddy!)

Rain in the summer is not that big an issue its the salt and grit on the roads that destroys your bike and the cold wet issue in the winter that means guards are a must for me. I do agree with you Puddings that uninvited wheelsuckers deserve a bit of belgian toothpaste (I like that one).
