How does Hardknott / Wrynose etc compare to the lower bit of Kirkstone pass if you go up out of Ambleside instead of Windermere / Troutbeck?

Don't know what anyone else thinks but I found Kirkstone quite a bit easier than Hardknott the incline near the start and the bit just at the end of Kirkstone were the worst on that the rest seemed fairly steady. Hardknott however once you start I don't think the Garmin ever showed it being any less than about 17% for the whole climb and it seems to go on forever. I only stopped once on Kirkstone and that was to see if a fellow cyclist was OK as he was stopped by the side of the road or would have got up no bother Hardknott though I stopped twice think I would have been OK if I was'nt on a standard chainset and nowt bigger than a 23 on the back though but certainly found it tougher.

I hear the bwlch y groes (north wales) is supposed to be one of the hardest in the country but can't say as I've never ridden it myself. i think technically the hardknott is pretty tough but i guess it all comes down to the day.

ones i ride often are moel famau (the bulk) from the ruthin side, and the old horseshoe pass (peaks at 21% but a lot of it it is 16-18%). personally i think these two are the hardest in my area.

Hi done the Fred whitton in2011 and hard knot pass appears at the 100 mile stage, came a cropper on the cattle grid, got back on and made it up, this was followed by wry nose another naughty climb, throw hoisted pass etc into the equation and there quite tough in one day cheers

Not sure I can beat Baldwin Street, but I've snapped a pedal going up Box Hill (of recent Olympic fame) and there is a long 1 in 4 locally known as The Struggle and part of the Helvellyn Triathlon route. Probably not the toughest in isolation but it's hard as part of a larger event.
