    Garmin Edge 800

Hopefully going to treat myself for Xmas..
Just a couple of queries if you can help.
Just looking at the base unit as I only need navigation (don't like the stop start with maps)..
I know you can download free maps e.g openstreet ( Any better ones available)

If I record a route I am riding , will it give turn by turn navigation to follow next time I do the same route? If I leave the route will it direct me back to it.

Can I pick a destination 50 miles away and get turn by turn directions
Basically does the navigation work the same as car sat nav..

    Ta for any info

Openstreet maps from here are better than City Navigator. They have the full UK cycle network on them as well as roads.

my favoured source of opensource mapping is here i have found that unlike some sites the links are kept up to date
With regards to handtec, although they are often cheapest by a £ or two watch their shipping charges because they can be high.
I would also recommend getting the Ant+ cadence/speed sensor - when i am not running it, I sometimes find under tree cover I lose signal and it takes a few moments to re-find itself and start measuring again. The sensor seems to keep it on track more easily

I used a site to get a map of Menorca, its really good for navigating. Will have to wait till I get back to post up the sites name as I'm still there :-)

Had the 800 for over a year now - got the full european map pack included and have to say I havent looked back - the system is great and the things you can actually do with a 800 is superb.
Its pre loaded with training exercises and has the facility to input your own - good for on the turbo etc as well on the streets.
The mapping I have is great and in detail and the battery lasts long time jonny.
The only gripe i really have is when i'm following a route the arrow that tells you to turn is very small.
I would have liked to have a big arrow pop up on the screen and say "TURN HERE DICKHEAD"
Otherwise its a great item and well worth the cost.

But you don't get that adrenaline rush of 'not really knowing where you're going'! Also you can pick up one of those AA 'fits in a suitcase' roadmaps from any garage for about a fiver!

    .
Yes you can - but then you will need a sextant and compass and a sliding rule to work out back calculations of the earths rotation and magnetic north variations to calculate your average speed and dont forget the DR who will have to run beside you to take the heart rate readings as you go by pumping the band on your arm as it measures your blood preasure and then the other medical genius and the geek with the computer to work out your power output.
    .
Better to really get a bike computer than an old fasioned map.
    .
After all - if that was the case - I would be writing you a letter by hand and putting it in the post for you to read a week later - instead of replying on my laptop in seconds.
