Hi all, thanks for the thoughts. I did order a Met Parachute helmet, but I'm going to return it because although it looks perfect, it wouldn't have provided any protection for my chin - there's nothing to stop it riding up away from your chin when you hit the ground.

I've ordered a Casco Viper MX to see if that's any better. If nothing else it might be useful for when enthusiasm exceeds talent on my cyclocross bicycle.

Having a 2 inch gash across my face (complete with big scab and protruding stitches) is less than ideal since my job is pretty customer facing, and looking like a unshaven tramp who came off badly in a bar fight is not helpful.

Regarding gravel rash: my clothes aren't even scratched, which is odd given I've now no skin on my knee or elbow.
