With your budget I would go Giant no question. In fact I'd stick with Giant for anything up to the £1500 mark.

Sounds like a quote from the Giant sales manager.

Go for the Boardman, better spec. for your money IMO. If you looking at a lower budget, you won't get better than the BTwin Triban3 from decathlon for 300 quid. I have a 2012 Boardman Race, and it is a fantastic bike for the money.

And I have a humble Boardman hybrid, which I use for commuting, and for almost three years it has performed flawlessly. In all weathers it carries me and my gear up hill and down dale and I unreservedly recommend the brand. If the road bikes that carry the same name are built to the same standard you are on a winner.

( As long as you swap the tyres for something a little beefier. )

Not got one myself but the Decathlon Triban 3 gets excellent reviews considering it's price of £299.99.

Component wise it is along the lines of the suggestions you posted with Shimano 2300 running gear, that would also leave you some cash to buy some clothing, again the Decathlon stuff is excellent value for money.
