I get the KOM concept, but when I search my local area the routes are all rubbish. I got a message yesterday after recently re-installing the app to say someone had tied my KOM. I didn't even know I had set one on the one ride I actually used strava last year. When I looked it was a meaningless 0.4m stretch of town center road that includes 2 mini roundabouts and a set of traffic lights. I was probably only the fastest because I headed out on that cycle at 645am and had no traffic or pedestrians to deal with. I couldn't care less if I was last - Number one; because I'm not really interested in "first one from the big tree to the lamppost" KOM's, and Number 2; a town center isn't really the place for a time trial (IMHO). I'd rather find a 30m route that someone posted and try that, but like I say the app is littered with strange half mile routes.

I know the KOM concept hasn't been without controversy for Strava. I remember there was the lawsuit a couple of years ago. I think they were sued by the family of a cyclist who died while trying to reclaim his KOM. Anyway, I'm sure risk and liability are all dealt with in the small print when you download the app.

In the absence of a Garmin type device or cycle computer I will mainly be using strava to record my average speed.

That is a fair point Nathan, I have seen some large segments on there but not many. The London to Cambridge charity bike ride, for example, is on there as a whole segment.

And don't forget you can make your own, so make some nice big ones and hope or invite people to retrace your route.
