Conversely, a mate of mine flying to big Euro events has had his bike be sent elsewhere..... twice.

That can happen with any luggage.
Damage in a correctly packed hard bike box is rare.

Apparently the first things to be 'bumped' if there are issues is sports gear... ie if they need the luggage capacity unexpectedly for something else.

For this reason I've always travelled with shoes, helmet and a change of cycling clothes etc in carry-on so at least I can rent/borrow a bike whilst waiting for mine to be sent on, should it go astray.

The airlines I’ve used specifically tell you not to pack anything but a bike in the bike box.
Most ignore this(me included)and pack everything around the bike...I pay for 28kg so my box will be 27-28kg!
All I take in the cabin is wallet and passport.

I also found that BA do not weigh the bike box, as you get sent to the oversize bag area with it. So having spent hours carefully weighing it on the way out found it completely un-necessary! Shoved loads in there on the way home.

No way would I leave Oakleys, GPS etc in it though, they stay with me.

GCN did an excellent video on packing for a bike trip.

In a perfect world, I'd have 3 weeks off work and cruise over in the you know what, PRS =)

Spoke to two mates, one seems interested, incidentally the one that has had his bike lost twice was less keen.
